London remains one of the great captivating cities of the world. So much seems crammed in and yet there is still room for grand palaces, sweeping parks and more museums and exhibits than you could visit in a year. Equal parts foodie, culture, business and fun, there is something for everyone in London. You’ll need an umbrella handy, even in summer there are 15 rainy days a month, but when the sun comes out all is forgiven – it’s glorious!

Life in London as a Student and Young Professional

Living

London is a powerhouse business hub with many types of companies in all industries thriving in this grand old capital. It’s a special place to spend time as a young professional.

Getting around means lots of buses and tubes (subway). The black cabs (taxis) are everywhere and it’s now even easier to track one down with official black cab apps for your phone.

Mornings and evening rush hours are pretty hectic but you’ll quickly get used to the hustle, you’ll see plenty of people using their bags as improvised battering rams!

Evenings and weekends mean attending one of the many events that might take your fancy, or visiting attractions such as parks, museums, galleries, or historic building.

Eating

London pubs are still a mainstay of life but the coffee shop scene is as big here as any other major city. You’ll find some great takes on the cafe format here. Likewise if you’ve food preferences for vegetarian or vegan food, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Working

Work culture is cosmopolitan and professional. Business environments tend to be well structured and focused on a work-hard vibe. There will normally be opportunities during the day for some light-hearted chat (often called banter) to make the day pass with a smile.

Dress code is normally business attire but it’s not unusual for some companies to adopt a “smart but casual” approach to dress. The standard workweek is around 40 hours with overtime used when things get busy. Lunch is sometimes eaten at desks but most companies give employees some time to get out of the office for a break at lunchtime.

Our local favourites

Little Venice

Did you know London has a Little Venice? This calm and tranquil area of canals can be found between Maida Vale and Paddington and features some lovely waterside bistros and pubs. Canal trips and waterbuses can be found here to make it a day out.

Pie & Mash at The Old Bank of England

London has a historic love affair with pie and potato mash. Our favorite is The Old Bank of England on Fleet Street. With Sweeny Todd’s barbershop next door it evokes Victorian London, all while being soaked in delicious gravy!
