Kim’s Internship With a London Engineering Firm

“I have learnt an insane amount over the last two months. Having been at Uni for two years, I have learnt so much more in a short space of time. I love the fact that so much effort has gone into us having a such a good time. My overall experience so far has been incredible, the balance between working and having fun with friends, and the accommodation has just been great.”

What to Expect

Engineers blend their creativity with scientific rigor to carefully plan and execute their designs. The projects you’ll be tackling can vary widely; from bridges to nuclear power stations, your job is to ensure the good working and maintenance of structures, engines, aircraft and more. And if you can make things more efficient in the process, even better.

Your firm will likely specialize in its own area of engineering, so you’ll soon gain experience in a highly competitive sector. A traditionally male arena, engineering firms are taking steps to ensure better gender parity; the good news is that there are more opportunities for women than ever before.

You might also find yourself attending training, seminars and other events as part of your role; use these opportunities to network and build up some contacts.

You’ll need to work towards accreditation to continue on your career path, so you might also find yourself taking the first steps towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status while you work.

During my internship in Seoul the Beyond Academy team did everything they could to make me feel at home. There was a lot to take in between getting to know everyone and starting an internship, but it was well worth it!
