Meet the Beyond management team.

Ryan

CEO

Ryan left school at 16, with barely any qualifications to a gardening job. He realised that he wanted more and taught himself the skills needed to get a ‘professional’ job.

He joined KPMG at 17 where he spent 6 years in a number of roles, the most recent was in the Advisory consulting team where he lead several large scale client projects for some of the worlds biggest brands. He left KPMG to join a rapidly growing tech firm in London where he oversaw new products.

Shortly after, at 23 he moved to Hong Kong where he spent 6 years. Initially as a director of a tech startup where he lead a team of 20+. Next he joined some friends in building and scaling The Intern Group to 14 locations globally.

Ryan also owned one of Hong Kong’s most popular cafe companies, and has provided consulting to Private Equity Companies in Asia. In 2018 he sold out of businesses and followed his dream of moving and living in Tokyo.

David

CFO

David has served in a number of senior leadership roles, he was the CEO of global professional services firm Red Flag Group (500+ employees) for over three years, and remains on the board today.

Before that, he served for a decade with Ernst & Young and was also the Asia-Pacific Finance Director for a New York Stock Exchange–listed software company. While based in China, he established his own advisory practice serving multinational companies operating in China and various Asia-Pacific emerging markets. David has been based in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai for the past 22 years.

Krystal

COO

After graduating from LSE, Krystal went on to train as a Qualified Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor. Krystal has led multi-million dollar global strategy projects in KPMG and Deloitte. Realising that she has a passion for creating and growing businesses, Krystal left her Big 4 life behind at age 27 to pursue an entrepreneurial journey of her own. She built the Asia business of The Intern Group from scratch, and is also the founder of a cutting edge fashion-tech start-up.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Krystal spent 12 years living in London and is now enjoying life in Tokyo. She speaks fluent English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Japanese. Krystal is also an active advocate for sustainability and climate change.

Alex

Head of Programs

Before joining Beyond, Alex had a successful career as a management consultant in London. He studied Computing at University and went on to become an Analyst. He quickly realised that he found it much more interesting to work in varied companies and environments and so he joined a management consultancy.

After some time learning the field, he went freelance as an independent consultant. Alex has worked on multi million dollar global programs for brands such as Jaguar Land Rover, helping them to setup in China and AGCO who make Massey Ferguson tractors. Over the last 4 years has worked in Fintech, consulting a global bank on how to serve their customers better.

Alex is an advocate for helping people realise their potential and has worked on creating Times Leadership Challenge to build future leaders, and involved companies such as PwC, Barclays, Deloitte and Hewlett Packard to name a few.

Stephanie

Head of Role Success

Stephanie is a multilingual M.B.A.-level educated in Business Administration with a broad set of skills in project & stakeholder management. A self-starter with a strong track record of delivery, highly qualified professional with expertise across the United Nations System, Public Sector Policy, International Development and Client Relations. Stephanie is a positive individual who loves travelling and getting to know new cultures, having worked and lived in London, Vienna, France and Cairo, Egypt.

Stephanie has over 9 years’ experience working across a global organisation within the United Nations (U.N.).

Working with inter-governmental, bilateral and non-governmental partners across EMEA, LATAM and ASP to deliver a range of projects with budgets ranging from EUR 10k to EUR 56m.

Since then Stephanie has founded the United Career Coalition to help students and mid-career professionals increase their access to advice for UN applications, UN interviews and learn more about a career at the United Nations.

Culturally aware with a unique ability to relate to diverse populations from various backgrounds. Highly skilled in solving social and economic challenges for clients and stakeholder partnerships. Familiar with agile working methodologies and experienced in managing remote teams, possessing effective leadership and team management skills; taking charge and motivating others to achieve specific goals on an individual, team and company level.

Personally, committed to helping people with mentally and physical handicaps into sport through e.g. being a guide runner for the blind and visually impaired.

Emma

General Counsel

Emma is a dual-qualified lawyer (England & Wales and Hong Kong). After graduating in Law from Cambridge University, she trained as a solicitor in London with Magic Circle firm Allen & Overy, also spending time in the firm’s New York office. Emma loved her experience of working overseas, and so embarked on her next adventure, relocating to Asia where she has spent 15 happy years.

Emma requalified as a solicitor in Hong Kong with Herbert Smith Freehills, combining this with delivering professional legal training to junior solicitors and barristers. Emma is also an accredited mediator. Emma still loves to travel, and wishes Beyond Academy had been providing internships when she was at University, when she was instead obliged to spend her summers working in a fish and chip shop.

Lewis

Digital Marketing

Lewis’s passion for data analytics and technology led him from a degree in Neuroscience and Medicine, to pursuing a successful career in Digital Marketing. Doing good for those in need is important to Lewis, a few years ago he decided to move to Ecuador for several months where he volunteered with a charitable program that constructed infrastructure for communities in need.

Katheryn

Learning & Development

Katheryn is a trainer and coach who helps international people in Japan thrive through orientation and self-development programs. She holds a degree in International Business & Culture from Sophia University and is a certified wellness coach and change management trainer. Born to a Japanese mother and American father, Katheryn spent her childhood between the US and Japan and officially settled in Japan in 2009. She gained experience working with the international community through her experience at an international concierge company, and continues to enjoy solving issues that face foreigners in Japan. When Katheryn is not working, she loves strolling through Omotesando and salsa dancing.

Laura

Career Coach

Laura is a U.S. lawyer turned career coach. Now based in Tokyo, she has worked with hundreds of students and professionals worldwide in their endeavors to find and create international opportunities. For her efforts, Laura was featured on the Thriving Abroad podcast in March 2018, selected as a speaker for TEDx Hanoi 2018, and is the 2018 recipient of AAFSW’s prestigious Champion for Career Enhancement award. In addition to her day job, she leads an international professional development group called “Empowering Perspectives.”

Sonia

Partnerships – Europe

Sonia was born in Brussels. Half French and half Austrian, she grew up in Vienna and has been living there for almost 20 years. After working as a project manager in a marketing company overseeing the online marketing of a popular leisure brand she decided to resume her studies with a Bachelor in International Development, followed by a Masters in Business and Innovation Management. She then moved to Copenhagen where she worked for the United Nations for 2 years. Sonia loves travelling, getting to know new people and striking up a conversation on any given subject. Her smile and energy are quite contagious!

Miles

Partnerships – Asia

From Baltimore, USA but now based in Tokyo, Miles is a global adventurer. He graduated from Lehigh University with a Bachelor’s in Supply Chain Management and a Master’s in Sustainable Development. He has worked in project management, app development and various other roles. Miles is also a passionate social entrepreneur, he owns a shea butter company that reinvests 50% of its profits back into the producer community.

Rumi

Partnerships – Asia

Rumi grew up in Tokyo, where she started her career with the Seven Eleven Japan Headquarters. During her 10 year term she held several roles across Sales as well as Training & Development.

Rumi always dreamt of living overseas and so she set off on an incredible journey that lead her to live and work in Canada for 2 years. Upon returning to Tokyo she has focused on working in and consulting with many startups, helping them to launch and grow their businesses in Japan and overseas. Rumi is full of energy and has an outgoing and loving character that everyone admires.

Leo

Partnerships – Europe

Leo was born in Hong Kong and moved to the UK age 19 where he spent 12 years. University wasn’t for Leo and at 20 he dropped out and returned to Hong Kong to launch a career as a personal trainer.

Leo always had a passion for food and after 3 years of personal training he decided to pursue a change career. He transitioned full time into the food industry and he worked in several restaurants before opening a Japanese restaurant with a friend. Leo loves sports and is a keen lacrosse layer, he also loves getting out to the ocean and wake boarding at any chance he gets.

Annemarie

Admissions

Annemarie was born in Northern Ireland and moved to England when she was 17 to study music and acting. She then worked as an actor, and in between roles, held a variety of jobs, including working as a personal trainer, drama teacher, recruiter, and (many a Christmas) as an elf in Santa’s grotto!

In 2015, Annemarie resumed her studies and obtained an MA in Drama and Movement Therapy. Over the last few years, she has worked as a therapist and wellbeing-practitioner in a variety of settings throughout London, including schools, hospitals and professional theatre companies.

Annemarie is compassionate, empathetic and a good listener, who values building and maintaining relationships. Outside of work, Annemarie likes traveling, running, and walking her beagle, Lara.
